At the intersection of real and digital worlds, augmented reality opens up new narrative dimensions and invites users to be part of the story
From 29 September to 1 October, the 14th edition of the International Journalism Conference in Tours will take place on the theme of "Climate emergency and journalistic responsibilities". These themes are at the core of France Télévisions' innovation strategy. Visitors were able to discover them on our corner. Here is a overview of what our teams presented on site and public’s feedback.

But have you ever wonder how they work, what are their components are and where those come from? Karim Ben Khelifa, war correspondent and photojournalist, answers these questions in his augmented reality journalistic investigation, Seven Grams. Seven Grams beacause it is the amount of minerals that our smartphones contain for their proper functioning.
On July 14 2021, the Innovation Department team deployed its JPTech solution for mobile and outdoors augmented reality for broadcast at the Satory military camp for the production of two live sequences presented by Nicolas Chateauneuf to present the future French army tools during the morning special program on France 2.

How do you see the future of France TV?
Once again this year, France Télévisions' MediaLab de l'Information et l'Innovation Numérique proposed a new format for the special edition on the 14th of July : throughout the show, five sequences, live from Place de la Concorde, presented the latest French military equipment thanks to a totally unprecedented augmented reality technology. Using consumer equipment, we have developed an ultra-mobile device that enables virtual image sequences filmed by a moving camera, live, and outdoors: a feat that until now has been reserved for organizations and budgets that are very heavy to implement.
How to define this new media, at the frontier between video games, cinema and television, whose codes and contours are still blurred?
On October 3, a new virtual set sequence by Nicolas Chateauneuf in the TV news on France 2. But this time a novelty, the working tool has evolved: the computer graphics environment is managed by Unreal Engine, the famous rendering engine from the world of video games. Explanations on this world premiere.
Karim Ben Khelifa had been covering conflicts as a photojournalist for 15 years. On the Gaza Strip, faced with a scene like he had probably captured dozens of before, came the desire to really make a difference. The Enemy, a documentary project in virtual and augmented reality co-produced by the direction of New Writings of France Televisions, is the result.
